- Privhiet,
-
- get them on another satellite, preferably the newer Gorizont series.
- If they have the right (western) tracking equipment, even an unstable
- satellite is trackable, but with russian tracking controllers, it's
- like impossible. In extreme cases you are looking at 1-2 hours of
- outages (always at the same time) every day.
-
- Being downlinked in Estland sucks, from a international-LD rate point
- of view. You might want to look into downlinking in Germany or the UK
- instead, unless you are too far east.
-
- INMARSAT is allowed to provide land-based service where intelsat capacity
- is not available, and surplus capacity is available without effecting
- ship-to-shore service. Russia is one of the few countries where this
- is regularly permitted and done. Check out the Inmarsat-M service.
-
- Poor voice/data quality is less a function of the satellite than
- of where in the footprint you are located (always changes for oil
- companies, I know) and what signal to noise ratio you are getting
- at that particular location. If you are at the border of a footprint,
- a 3.8m dish might not do it. If you are in a great location though,
- an Inmarsat-M terminal (Jupiter 3s,etc.) might be perfect for you
- (0.8m dish with 'dome'), as it's easily moved.
-
- Portable units pricy ? well, I assume your friends are making some decent
- money over there, so 20,000 USD including country-specific licensing fees
- for a VSAT terminal shouldn't be so bad. The $5/min might hurt, though.
-
- Unfortunately I am not willing to disclose the name of my former
- employer who is doing service in Russia, and who might be a perfect
- solution for your needs. Getting scammed out of $15K hurts.
-
- bye,Kai
